the valais-based 3r group, a leader in medical imaging in french-speaking switzerland

the 3r group—réseau radiologique romand—is now the benchmark for community-based medical imaging in french-speaking switzerland and beyond. since 2000, it has continued to expand from its origins in valais. in addition to valais, 3r now operates in the cantons of vaud, fribourg, neuchâtel, geneva, and bern. the 2023 acquisition of radioviva in bülach (zh), with its two centers for radiology and nuclear medicine, marks a historic milestone by opening the network to the german-speaking swiss market.

the 3r group now relies on a dense network of 20 radiology centers strategically located across seven cantons. this extensive geographic presence facilitates access to high-quality medical imaging, reducing the distances patients must travel to undergo sophisticated radiological examinations.

in addition to this network of centers, there are 30 digital radiology facilities operated in partnership with general medical practices. at these satellite locations, 3r provides the medical practice with appropriate radiography equipment. the attending physician’s radiography room then functions as a decentralized branch of a 3r center.

the canton of valais, the historic birthplace of the 3r group, is home to three imaging centers. the institute of radiology in sion, founded in 1994, serves as the group’s historic center and headquarters. it offers the full range of modern radiology and medical imaging modalities. in 2020, this leading center inaugurated the network’s first pet-ct scanner, a cutting-edge technology particularly valuable for cancer diagnosis and monitoring.

the martigny imaging center (cima) complements the services available in central valais by offering a wide range of imaging exams in a modern setting. in the valaisan chablais region, the monthey-collombey radiology institute (irmc) provides local access for residents of lower valais.

the strength of the 3r group lies in its human capital. it brings together some 300 healthcare professionals. patients who walk through the doors of a 3r center benefit not only from the expertise of the local medical team but also from that of specialists at other centers in the network when necessary.

the 3r group has made technological innovation one of its strategic pillars. in 2020, 3r undertook a major modernization program by replacing all its ct scanners that were more than five years old. the year 2021 saw the deployment of several artificial intelligence tools across all centers in the network. these algorithms assist radiologists in the earlier, more accurate, and faster detection of certain conditions.
